Shearwater Health Holds the Nursing Informatics Summit and Career Fair
Taguig City, Metro Manila, March 3, 2023 — Shearwater Health, the first exclusively healthcare outsourcing company in the Philippines and the largest employer of healthcare professionals outside of hospitals, organized the Nursing Informatics Summit and Career Fair with the theme “The Era of Clinical Career Development and Progress” last March 3, 2023 at Marquis Events Place, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
The free event was participated in by more than 100 nursing students, PH registered nurses, U.S. registered nurses, and healthcare professionals. Shearwater Health key leaders together with industry leaders shared their insights on the impact of Filipino nurses to global healthcare outcomes, trends in global healthcare, and how Shearwater Health supports nursing professionals in elevating their careers.
In a 2022 news report, the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that there is shortage of health workers globally, specifically nurses and midwives. The largest shortages are in Southeast Asia and Africa. WHO estimates that the world will need an additional nine million nurses and midwives by the year 2030.
Shearwater Health has been providing options and solutions to address the global nursing shortage by partnering with its employees, universities, and professional organizations in the Philippines to develop career pathways for nursing professionals from internship to clinical workspace, and to immigration.
Shearwater Health has partnered with universities such as Far Eastern University, University of Cebu, and St. Jude College to embed an outsourcing curriculum called Healthcare Informatics. This expands the current curriculum, which only includes the traditional bedside model, to bedside and outsourcing model. This initiative will give nursing students more career options after graduation. Scholarships are also provided to graduating nursing students of the mentioned universities in exchange of their commitment to work in Philippine-based hospitals after graduation. The same scholars will also have an opportunity to be sponsored to work in the U.S.
In his keynote speech, Shearwater Health CEO Tom Kendrot stated, “The outsourcing industry we created in 2009 is what we now refer to as Clinical Process Outsourcing. At that point in time, nurses that went to school here in the Philippines only knew about bedside care. Well now there’s a whole other industry that we’re the pioneers of and we’d love to have you all join us. Either bedside or outsourcing, you have that career option now because of organizations like Shearwater Health.”
Shearwater Health also offers an accelerated nurse development program called Student On-the-Job Advancement and Readiness (SOAR) Program. Nursing students will be supported and guided by the company’s subject matter experts to develop technical skills and prepare them for a career in the clinical process outsourcing industry and/or abroad.
As an employer, Shearwater Health provides its employees with capability building opportunities such as subsidized licenses and certifications for Medical Coding and NCLEX through Shearwater Academy. It also offers a managed migration sponsorship and incentive program for its USRN employees called the Nurse Compass Program. Furthermore, the company helps its employees to map their career through expanded career pathways, supports them in making informed decisions through career coaching, and connects them with a community where they can share resources and best practices through Shearwater Health Society.
“With the help of Shearwater Health and of course other members of the industry, I’m sure we will be able to provide work, employment, whether it be here in the Philippines or elsewhere because we know that there really is a huge demand and it’s all out there for us to take.”
